Proof of the pudding: Jack Trench is to be installed at London Fields Primary School for a seminal food co-design

How will you boil an egg in the year 2050? A glib question maybe, but a radically altered climate will affect the way we carry out even the most basic day-to-day tasks.

Imagine a world which is extremely hot, extremely cold, or flooded. How will we source, prepare, cook, and eat our food? Under what protective conditions will we do it? We will be forced to do things differently. Are there opportunities to do things better?

These are all questions that designer Jack Trench and a team of experts will be exploring with our fledgling Year 5 designers at London Fields Primary School in Hackney under the banner Future Food Space. The teachers are already introducing the children to the subject for his arrival in February.

Over the course of six weeks, our co-design collaboration will teach children about how future-focused design can put food on our plates. Biophilic techniques (using nature in design with Oliver Heath); sustainable material use; and even a food preservation workshop with fermentation experts Pao Liu and Jelena Belgrave, will keep our children busy.

The grand reveal of London Fields Primary School’s food-based designs and settings in June, with creative collaboration and support of locally based co-design partners ‘The Art House’ at Acrylicize, will no doubt be a mouth-watering experience.
